Conquering hordes

I see that Sir Thomas Boyd-Carpenter, the new chairperson of the
Social Security Advisory Committee, is an Army wallah, presently
chief of Defence Staff for Programmes and Personnel – whatever that
means!

Meanwhile, another soldier, Brigadier Noel Muddiman, has been
appointed director of Motability, the disability charity.

There are a lot of senior military personnel taking early
retirement or being made redundant amid the government’s radical
defence cuts. Who knows how far this will go? They might find
themselves drawn inexorably to the higher echelons of social
services.

Please send suggestions for appropriate social services jobs for
Air Vice Marshals and Rear Admirals on the back of a postage
stamp.
