Government aims to halve drug use

The government has confirmed its pledge to halve serious drug
use among young people by 2008 in the Cabinet Office’s annual
report published last week. Other confirmed targets for the next
seven years include halving both the level of drug misuse by
offenders and the level of offending among drug misusers. The drugs
strategy also aims to double the number of drug misusers receiving
treatment.

The Cabinet Office, which oversees the new UK anti-drugs
co-ordination unit, has established the strategy targets as part of
the government’s public service agreements (PSAs) to which
government departments must commit themselves in return for
resources from the Treasury.
