Housing challenge of Leaving Care Act

Providing suitable accommodation
for children leaving care will prove to be one of the biggest
challenges for councils implementing the Children (Leaving Care)
Act 2000, according to NCH public policy adviser Amanda
Allard.

“This is the area where local
authorities will have to work the hardest to fill the gaps between
current practice and the vision of the act,” said
Allard.

Pointing to the fact that some
councils have to work with up to six district councils to find
suitable accommodation, she said councils would need to
“build up joint working and quotas with housing
associations” to make up
for the lack of
accommodation in their areas.
