New figures showing number of offenders with mental health problems

The government has published statistics showing the numbers of
offenders suffering from mental health problems.

Nearly 3,000 offenders were detained in hospital at the end of
last year, which was 3 per cent higher than in the previous
year.

The total number of offenders admitted to hospital last year was
968, which was 151 or 13 per cent less then the previous year.
There were 664 transferred from prison to hospital compared to 731
in 1999.

There were 333 people released into the community in 2000, which
was 2 per cent higher than the previous year.
