Wide variations in London’s services

London has some of
the best public services in the country – and some of the worst – according to
a report on the capital’s councils by the Audit Commission.

The report – intended
both as a round-up of its London work over the past 18 months and a starting
point for initiatives in the next year – shows wide variation in the quality
and value for money of services across and within London boroughs.

However, the
prospects for future improvements are higher in London than in the rest of
England. The findings also show that performance is not necessarily linked to
spending by a particular authority or to local levels of deprivation.

A second document by
the commission examines housing, environment and regeneration in the capital.
