Standards for children`s homes published

National minimum standards and regulations for children’s homes
have been published by the government.

The new measures introduced under the Care Standards Act 2000
will come into force on 1 April this year, and will be policed by
the National Care Standards Commission. They cover the physical
aspects of homes and the employment of staff, including the minimum
training requirements.

The commission will determine whether a home should be
registered, and what action, which could include prosecution,
against homes which breach the standards. Both independent and
council-run homes will be covered by the new standards.
