Investigation puts inquiry on hold

The Clywch Inquiry into alleged sexual abuse
of children at a south Wales school has been suspended
indefinitely.

Peter
Clarke, the children’s commissioner for Wales, suspended the
inquiry last week after the police announced a new child protection
investigation following fresh allegations about another teacher at
the school.

The
inquiry has centred on the activities of John Owen, a former drama
teacher at Rhydfelen Comprehensive school in Pontypridd. He was due
to face criminal charges over alleged abuse of pupils, but killed
himself last year, just one day before the trial.

Following calls for a public
inquiry the children’s commissioner decided to launch an
investigation, the Clywch inquiry.

The
teacher against whom the fresh allegations have been made was also
one of the key witnesses at the inquiry.
