Prescott promises more affordable homes for key workers

Affordable housing for key workers such as social service staff
in London and the South East will be a focus for an additional
£1.5billion of government spending.

Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott said yesterday (Thursday)
that the new homes would be concentrated in the Thames Gateway,
Ashford in Kent, Milton Keynes and the London-Stansted-Cambridge
corridor.

Councillor Tony Newman, chair of the Association of London
Government’s housing panel, said the lack of affordable
accommodation had been partly responsible for people regularly
moving, making social services provision more difficult and
costly.

In the North and Midlands the funding will be targeted on
improving areas affected by low demand and abandonment of
properties.
