People with disabilities must be involved in design, new report urges

Accessibility would be improved by involving people with
disabilities in the consultation and development of buildings,
infrastructure and transport, according to new guide from the
department of transport, writes Anabel Unity
Sale.

The report advises local authorities and transport providers on
the design of their transport so they can meet their legal
responsibility to offer accessible public transport and
footpaths.

Maria Eagle, minister for disable people, said: “Good design is
easy to overlook but crucial. Improvements are often inexpensive
and non-disruptive, but can make a real difference to disabled
people, older people and others.”

She added the government was committed to making the wider
environment as accessible as possible for people with
disabilities.
