‘Consult disabled people on design’

Accessibility would be improved by involving disabled people at the
consultation stage of building design, infrastructure development
and transport, according to a new guide from the Department of
Transport.

It advises local authorities and transport providers on design
needs so that they can meet their legal responsibility to offer
accessible public transport and footpaths.

Minister for disabled people Maria Eagle said: “Good design is easy
to overlook but crucial. Improvements are often inexpensive and
non-disruptive but can make a real difference to disabled people,
older people and others.”

She added that the government was committed to making the wider
environment as accessible as possible for disabled people.
