Guides ‘discriminate against over-65s’

The Relatives and Residents Association has claimed that the
amended standards for care homes discriminate against older people
and attack their human rights.

The charity pointed out that the standard for room sizes was lower
than that put forward by the Youth Justice Board for young
offenders.

In addition, older people in homes would not be given the same
information about contracts, complaints and inspection as under
65s.

It said the amendments sent a clear message that certain basic
standards did not apply to older people in residential care.
