Government moves to restrict use of bed and breakfast

The government is to consult in the New Year on plans to
strengthen legislation so homeless families are only placed in bed
and breakfast accommodation in emergencies and for no longer than
six weeks.

To help ease the problem of families being placed in B&Bs,
voluntary sector projects that help homeless families out of
temporary accommodation have been awarded an extra
£350,000.

Cabinet office social exclusion minister Barbara Roche said
homeless families had to be helped more effectively. Part of the
funding will also be used to support new research into the impact
of temporary accommodation on education and health.
