Protest greets plan for asylum centre

About 2,000 people protested last week against the government’s
latest proposal for an accommodation centre housing 400 single male
asylum seekers at HMS Daedalus in Gosport, Hampshire.

Immigration minister Beverley Hughes said she realised there may be
“some concern” among those living near to the sites, but insisted
the Home Office would be “working closely” with the local community
as the proposals were developed.

But Gosport Council and the local community said they had not been
properly consulted.
