Putting Assertive Outreach into Practice

Deborah Davidson and Janice Lowe. Pavilion Publishing. £150
plus p&P. Telephone 01273 623 222. www.pavpub.com

This video pack from the Institute for Applied Health and Social
Policy for team leaders and project managers is highly informative
and clearly presented, writes Barry Crossley, community outreach
team manager. Designed to help local service developers convert
policy into practice, the pack focuses on implementation issues,
with the video concentrating on the structures and systems used by
two teams in London. The written material provides good back-up
content for team development. The best part is when the
practitioners talk about the significant benefits of
multi-disciplinary team working, for themselves and their clients.
Their commitment is tangible. All in all, very helpful.

FirstCheck – A Step by Step Guide for Organisations to
Safeguard Children

NSPCC. £29.95 from consultancy@nspccc.org.uk
or tel: 0116 234 7200

FirstCheck is a manual and a comprehensive guide to child
protection, writes Ruth Steele, child policy manager. It is for UK
organisations of any size that cater for children. The aim is to
prevent abuse of children by people working in organisations. I
have no hesitation in recommending it; it is user-friendly and
clear, and every school, nursery, ballet class, club and so on
should have at least two copies available to all, but especially
managers and staff. Printed on strong paper, it looks practical.
Bright colours and photographs associate it immediately with
children. Two minor criticisms, though. It could be shorter. It is
an information-full publication and intelligent editing might have
improved it. The photographs of children are fun – but the captions
underneath seem a bit pointless.
