Council chief takes over social services

Northamptonshire Council’s chief executive is to assume
responsibility for social services in response to Lord Laming’s
report into the death of Victoria Climbie.

A spokesperson for the council said Peter Gould had acted on a
recommendation in the report which called on senior managers to
take responsibility for the front line.

Gould will oversee the workings of a reorganised social services
department, which will be split into a children and families
department and a department for adult services.

A spokesperson for the Association of Directors of Social Services
said Gould’s new role would be a first.
