Drug treatment needs of young offenders in prison

A third of imprisoned young male offenders with drug or alcohol
problems have been in contact with mental health services outside
prison and almost one in four have self-harmed at some time in
their lives, according to new research from the Home Office.

Of 80 young men surveyed, three quarters were dependent on one
or more drugs, most commonly heroin and crack. Twenty per cent had
already injected drugs.
