More than 2.5 million older people live on income-related
benefits in England and Wales, according to a report from older
people’s charity Help the Aged.
However, the numbers vary between regions with 370,000 older
people living on income-related benefits in the north west compared
to less than 150,000 in Wales.
Other key points:
– the proportion of older people on income-related benefits
ranges from just two per cent in one electoral ward to 85 per cent
in another
– areas with highest proportion of older people on
income-related benefits: Hackney, Islington, Manchester, Newham,
Liverpool. Manchester, Salford and Newcastle-Upon-Tyne
