Scotland launches first aid kit for mental health

A three-year action plan for improving mental health and
well-being in Scotland is launched by the Scottish Executive this
week, writes Maggie Wood.

The £24 million action plan will support new and existing
national and local projects aimed at improving mental health in
Scotland. It also aims to prevent suicide, raise awareness and end
stigma.

As part of the plan, a pilot project launched in Edinburgh this
week, Mental Health First Aid, will train instructors to assist
health, agency, voluntary sector and community workers from across
Scotland to pick up problems at an early stage and refer people for
“first aid”.

Gregor Henderson, director of the National Programme for
Improving Mental Health, said: “Improving public
understanding and awareness of mental health is essential to enable
people to take care of their own mental health.”
