Financial worries plague care leavers

Young people leaving care and trying to find jobs are dogged by
money worries and low educational achievement, research published
for National Care Leavers Week reveals.

The study finds that many worry unnecessarily because they
misunderstand their benefit entitlements.

Although the report says some of those interviewed did find jobs
and went into further education, others struggled “under the
challenges and responsibilities they faced”.

Young mothers face particular difficulties, the research
adds.

It called for support for care leavers to be flexible and depend on
individual needs.
