New care services director appointed

Antony Sheehan has been appointed as director of care services
at the Department of Health.

He will report to chief medical officer Liam Donaldson and will
be responsible for all aspects of social care including older
people’s services, disability, and children’s
health.

The position, which he has already taken up, means that he will
surrender his roles as chief executive of the National Institute
for Mental Health in England and as head of mental health at the
DoH.

Phil Sculthorpe will act as operating officer with NIMHE and
Anne Richardson as head of the DoH’s mental health group.

The Department of Health confirmed the new post was separate to
the national director of social care announced by health secretary
John Reid last month.
