High Court rules on responsibilities

A High Court judge ruled this week that it was the government’s
responsibility to support destitute and disabled asylum seekers
with children.

Mr Justice Ouseley settled a dispute between the National Asylum
Support Service and Haringey Council and ruled that it was Nass’s
responsibility to support a Ugandan mother suffering from HIV and
her two children while she waits for the outcome of her asylum
application.

However, the judge recognised the importance of the case by
granting Nass leave to appeal his decision.

A Refugee Action spokesperson said that until now the issue of
responsibility had been unclear and determined on a case by case
basis.
