Welsh assembly votes for smacking ban

Welsh assembly members are backing calls for a ban on smacking
children, writes Alex Dobson.

They voted in favour of the ban by 41 votes to nine, during a
debate on children’s services. While the assembly has no
primary law making functions, members hoped Westminster would be
influenced by the results of the vote.

The assembly has already devised a ‘parents code’ as
part of a strategy to discourage parents from hitting their
children.
