Johnston unhappy with top-up verdict

British Association of Social Workers director Ian Johnston has
criticised the decision by the government not to exempt social work
students from the proposed new top-up fees, after it emerged that
nursing students would be exempt.

“Social workers tend to be out of sight out of mind unless
something goes wrong,” said Johnston.

He also criticised an advertisement placed in a national newspaper
by Conservative leader Michael Howard inviting public sector
workers to submit their ideas on how services could be improved. He
said he was “not surprised” the advert failed to mention social
workers alongside nurses, doctors and teachers.
