Migrants told streets not paved with gold

The government is to launch an advertising campaign to deter
citizens from the 10 countries which are joining the European Union
in May migrating to the UK.

A Home Office spokesperson said such campaigns had been used before
and were intended to let people in those countries know that “the
streets are not paved with gold” in Britain.

The adverts will also explain how the benefits system works and
that life in the UK can be hard.

The government fears that when the European Union welcomes new
countries including Slovakia and Latvia thousands of workers will
be keen to move to Britain.
