Unison seeks to avert Scottish split

Unison has called on the Scottish branch of the British Association
of Social Workers to scrap plans to end ties with the union and set
up its own trade union for social workers.

Owen Davies, senior national officer at Unison, said that it was
“nonsense” to think that setting up an “elitist” separate union for
social workers would get them a better deal on “pay and
conditions”.

“The interests of the profession are best served by improving
co-operation between the two organisations, not by trying to
initiate a split,” Davies added.

BASW Scotland members are to vote on the proposal at its annual
general meeting at Community Care Live in London next
week.
