Dropped abuse case is cue for probe

Western Isles Council has invited the Social Work Services
Inspectorate to look into the authority’s involvement with a child
abuse case that was recently dropped.

Charges were made against seven men and a woman following dawn
raids by social workers and police in a child abuse investigation
on the Isle of Lewis last October.

But earlier this month a spokesperson for the Crown Office and the
procurator fiscal service said that following a thorough
investigation, the crown counsel had instructed that no proceedings
should be taken in the case.

Last week, it emerged that Western Isles Council had begun an
evaluation of its procedures.
