Minister defends new asylum act

Immigration minister Des Browne has tried to avert fears that new
asylum legislation will see many children of parents whose
application for asylum has failed being taken into care.

He told delegates at a Refugee Council conference last week that he
was “satisfied the purpose of the Immigration and Asylum Act 2004
is not to take children away from their parents”.

Browne dismissed suggestions from delegates that the policy was in
conflict with Children Bill proposals.
