Minister concerned over standards

Education minister Lord Filkin is to meet the Commission for
Social Care Inspection following concerns that standards in
children’s homes are not being met sufficiently or fast enough.

During a debate in the House of Lords last week, Filkin said
that he wanted assurances that the expectations about the standard
of training of children’s home staff were being met as quickly as
is realistic.

He added that he would also like to meet directors of social
services to discuss progress.

Concern about the quality of some children’s homes was prompted
by the screening of a Dispatches programme on Channel Four in
November 2004, which showed homes were not properly vetting
staff.

The CSCI has met the producers of the documentary and confirmed
that further investigations are being carried out.
