Three unions may merge

The Transport and General Workers Union, amicus and the GMB
could be set to merge into a new trade union, it emerged today,
writes Clare Jerrom.

The T&G unanimously agreed to open talks on the creation of
a new trade union based on the merger. The union could have 2.5
million members and become the largest trade union in the private
sector.

“We could now put behind us pointless inter-union
competition and focus on fighting for our members in the workplace
as one powerful union,” said Tony Woodley, T&G general
secretary.

T&G plan to begin talks with amicus and the GMB
simultaneously. However, Woodley said that if the GMB was unable to
participate from the outset, talks with amicus would proceed
anyway.
