Big pay hike for new commissioner

England’s new children’s commissioner will command an annual salary
of £130,000 – nearly double that of his UK counterparts and
£30,000 more than the post was originally advertised at.

The children’s commissioners in Wales, Northern Ireland and
Scotland are paid between £70,000 and £75,000 and the
English job, recently awarded to Al Aynsley-Green, was advertised
with a salary of about £100,000.

The salary was revealed last week in a parliamentary answer.

A Department for Education and Skills spokesperson said it had
always been prepared to pay more for an exceptional
candidate.

Aynsley-Green will have many more children to represent because of
England’s higher population.
