Care worker killed during off-duty visit

A care worker was stabbed to death while visiting a hostel for the
homeless.

Melanie Gray, who worked part-time with children with learning
difficulties, was visiting her boyfriend at the Wassand Lodge
hostel in Crawley, West Sussex.

Her attacker, who is not believed to be a resident at the hostel,
repeatedly stabbed Gray, a mother of five, before attempting to set
fire to the building.

Thirteen people, including young children, had to be evacuated
following the attack on Sunday, 24 May.

A spokesperson for Crawley Council said it took security seriously,
and that residents were being reminded of the importance of using
the door entry system correctly.

Daniel Walker, 24, of Crawley, has been charged with Gray’s murder.
