Detention powers may be tabled

Powers to detain asylum claimants for 24 hours while their claim
is processed are likely to be included in next week’s Queen’s
Speech, according to Westminster insiders.

The measure, together with proposals to crack down on asylum
abuse, are set to be introduced as part of an Asylum and
Immigration Bill.

New powers to fast-track asylum applications and civil penalties
for employers that hire illegal workers are also likely to
feature.

A draft Youth Justice Bill is expected to outline plans to
“improve the operation and effectiveness of the youth justice
system” and could include provision for more community sentences
and improved rehabilitation schemes.

The Charities Bill, which modernises the law governing the
voluntary sector, looks set to be reintroduced as does the Equality
Bill, which extends protection against discrimination to religious
groups.

The Child Benefit Bill and draft Child Contact and Adoption Bill
could also be set for a return.
