Parents deny baby murder charges

A father charged with murdering his baby daughter admitted shaking
her and pressing her chest but said he did it to wake her up.

A post-mortem had found that four-week-old Asha Sabaratnam’s ribs
were broken in at least 20 places and that she may have been
shaken, the Old Bailey was told last week.

Kantharupan Muragamoorthy, 27, a Sri Lankan asylum seeker whose
claim has failed, told jurors his daughter had been ill.

He said his partner, Devika Sabaratnam, 24, woke him after she
found Asha lifeless in her cot and the couple called an ambulance.

Sabaratnam is also charged with Asha’s murder. Both parents deny
the charges.
