Old Bailey hears of mother’s anguish

A mother charged with murdering her baby told the Old Bailey last
week of her devastation when the four-week-old girl died.

Devika Sabaratnam, 24, said that she was unable to wake her
daughter Asha on the day last August when the murder is alleged to
have happened. Her partner, 27-year-old Kantharupan Muragamoorthy
shook the baby and pressed down on her chest but she did not wake
up, Sabaratnam told the court.

It took her three or four days to take in that Asha had died, she
said.

A post-mortem found that Asha’s ribs were broken in at least 20
places and that she may have been shaken.

Sabaratnam and Muragamoorthy, of Southall, west London, deny
murder. The trial continues.
