STAR RATING 4/5

This handbook will serve as a practical resource for social
workers. It has been designed by social workers for social workers
and reflects the complex realities of working with families,
although it focuses on each issue only briefly, writes Charlotte
Pearson.

The format of the handbook makes the content readily accessible.
The “decision check” boxes are likely to be of particular use to
social workers, offering a systematic approach to ensure that
practitioners have explored all avenues before making a final
decision which may profoundly affect the family they are
supporting.

The book highlights some additional material which is appropriately
grouped after each chapter. While the handbook covers several
issues, these may be regarded as area-specific or a little “light”
in terms of scope.

As a supportive reference tool for social workers this handbook is
well placed to help them make informed decisions and
recommendations. It could practically be carried at all times and
therefore inform on-the-spot decisions.

Charlotte Pearson is a researcher at the Centre for Public
Health Research, University College Chester
