Recruitment Analysis – Wales

The number of staff employed in social services in September
2004 was 19,576, which was an increase of 3.9 per cent on the
previous year.

Headquarters staff, social work and home care staff accounted
for 12,271 with residential homes and day services employing the
rest.

There were 3,087 full-time and 620 part-time social workers with
97 per cent of them having a qualification (wte). Just over a 1,000
social workers worked in children’s services and about 900
with adults.

Nearly four out of 10 workers in older people’s and
children’s homes had a qualification.

About 15 per cent of staff spoke Welsh good enough to conduct
their work in.
