STAR RATING: 3/5

“Get your house in order now” is the central theme of this
comprehensive guide to planning for later in life,
writes Amy Leadbeater.

Written for the public in a no-nonsense style, it suggests
practical steps that can be taken early to avert crises. There is
guidance to de-mystify everything from finances to funerals and, in
particular, it provides empowering advice on what to look for when
choosing a care home. The book counters fears and ignorance about
planning for old age by reminding the reader of the possible
consequences of inaction: family disputes and abuse.

The author’s pragmatic approach is helpful; topics are divided into
lists of issues and answers making it easy to read. But at times
his clear-cut approach leads to oversimplification of family
situations. In other places the content is very detailed and it
could serve as a reference book, though it is a shame there is no
index.

Overall it provides sound advice and is a useful tool for members
of the public and professionals alike. It has already informed my
practice.
