Councils under fire as centres face axe

Councils under fire as centres face axe Funding difficulties and
poor relations with local authorities are threatening day centres
for homeless people, a charity has warned.

Rebecca Sycamore, director of regional development at Homeless
Link, said some local authorities were slow to recognise the value
provided by the centres, she added.

The Slough Homeless Our Concern centre and St Theresa’s Day Care
Centre in Peterborough will close in the autumn unless they secure
more funding.

A Slough Council spokesperson said street homelessness was not a
problem in the town. But Mandy McGuire, day centre project manager,
said the council did not appreciate the importance of the charity’s
work.

St Theresa’s wants £50,000 from Peterborough Council but has
so far been unsuccessful.
