New Home Office computer system goes live

A new computer system that allows police forces across the UK to
share information about the most dangerous violent and sex
offenders in a bid to prevent re-offending has gone live,
writes Clare Jerrom.

The Police Information Technology Organisation has built the
Violent and Sex Offenders Register in partnership with police and
probation professionals.

“ViSOR provides online, for the first time, complete and
up-to-date information on the country’s most dangerous
offenders,” said Fiona Mactaggart, Home Office minister.
“It will help to reduce re-offending, protect the public and
save police time.”

The database includes a photographic library of the offender
over a period of time, including distinguishing marks and tattoos,
which will make it harder for an individual to change appearance
and re-emerge undetected.
