Newham Council agrees to alter tenancy agreements

The London Borough of Newham has agreed to remove potentially
unfair terms from tenancy agreements used in providing housing to
previously homeless people, writes Clare
Jerrom.

The Office of Fair Trading obtained undertakings under the
Unfair Terms in Consumer Contract Regulations after it concluded
that a number of terms in the council’s non secure tenancy
agreements were unfair.

OFT chair John Vickers said: “All tenants have a right to
clear and fair contract terms. The OFT will continue to act to
protect tenants against unfair terms in their contracts.”

The OFT will shortly be publishing a revised version of its
guidance on unfair terms in tenancy agreements.
