Health secretary Patricia Hewitt today admitted that NHS cuts were impacting adversely on social care.
She told a King’s Fund breakfast briefing on this week’s health and social care white paper that “short-term” decisions by primary care trusts to close cottage hospitals “put pressure on social services budgets”.
A number of local authorities have warned that they are having to take responsibility for provision abandoned by PCTs bent on slashing their deficits.
