There are more than 10 million disabled people in Britain, according to figures released by the government today.

This estimate includes people with limiting long-standing illnesses. Around 4.6 million are over the state pension age and there are 700,000 disabled children.

The annual spending power of disabled adults is unchanged and is still around £80 billion, according to the statistics which are taken from the Family Resources Survey and published today by the Department for Work and Pensions.
