Local Government Association urges custody to be reserved for violent children

Children committing non-violent offences should be given community sentences, the Local Government Association says today.

Prison must be reserved for violent children who pose a risk to society, states the new LGA report

About one third of children in prison are violent offenders, according to figures from youth crime charity Nacro.

Money saved by keeping non-violent children out of prison should be diverted into community schemes, suggest the LGA.
