Ageing population continues to rise

The number of people aged over 85 grew by 6 per cent in 2004-5, 10 times the increase in the general population, figures released today show.

The Office for National Statistics put the over-85 population at almost 1.2 million at 30 June 2005, and the rise reflects increasing demographic pressures on care services.

The government predicts that there will be 4 million people over 85 by 2051.
