Phillips to lead new commission

Trevor Phillips has been named as chair of the new Commission for Equality and Human Rights.

He is currently chair of the Commission for Racial Equality, which will be subsumed into the CEHR, as will the Disability
Rights Commission and the Equal Opportunities Commission, when the new organisation starts operating in autumn 2007.

Phillips will fill the CEHR post for an initial three years. He will stand down from his CRE role as soon as a replacement
is found. The CEHR’s chief executive will be appointed by the end of the year.

Phillips said the CEHR’s ambition would be to “create a society that is at ease with all aspects of its diversity”.
