Councils should be aware of childcare obligations

Local authorities need to be aware of their legal obligation to ensure staff who are parents and entitled to childcare receive it, the National Children’s Bureau has warned.

The charity has produced a guide to help professionals ensure they are aware of their obligations under the Childcare Act 2006, to assess working parents’ need for childcare and secure such services.

Under the act authorities either have to provide childcare through their own agencies or ensure that it is available to working parents through the private and voluntary sector.

The Childcare Act 2006: the essential guide was produced together with the National Foundation for Educational Research.
