Remploy bosses opt for top-end company cars

The management of the state-owned company which is asking 2,000 disabled people to take voluntary redundancy to cut costs is allowing its top brass to drive Mercedes sports cars, people carriers, off-roaders and sporty versions of Audis and Saabs at the taxpayer’s expense.

Internal documents seen by the Guardian show that Remploy – which is closing or merging 28 factories by next month and cutting its workforce from 5,000 to 3,000 – has a Whitehall company car scheme for 441 managers and sales staff driving vehicles worth more than £8m.

Internet Miss Bimbo game for girls attacked by parents

Parents’ groups have condemned a new internet game in which girls as young as nine are encouraged to “buy” their virtual dolls breast operations and facelifts.

The aim of the Miss Bimbo beauty contest game, which was launched in Britain last month, is to become the “hottest, coolest, most famous bimbo in the whole world”, and contestants who compete against each other are told to “stop at nothing”, even “meds or plastic surgery”, to ensure their dolls win.

Academies ‘expel pupils over league tables’

Teachers have accused academy schools of expelling badly behaved children to inflate their position on school league tables.

The National Union of Teachers also claimed that the schools – run by churches, charities, universities and entrepreneurs – may be undermining teachers’ morale by flouting national agreements on pay and conditions.

Call for Tory councillor to resign after he suggests parents on benefits should be sterilised after one child

John Ward, a Tory member of Medway Council, has faced calls to resign after he claimed that there should be compulsory sterilisation for parents on benefits after their first child.

He has been criticised by local political leaders while Conservative central office described his comments as abhorrent.
