Inquest into death of mentally ill man in custody to start

The inquest into the death of a mentally ill man is to open on Monday.

Faisal Al-Ani died after being restrained while in the custody of Essex Police, according to charity Inquest.

Al-Ani was detained on 31 July 2005 after he was seen behaving strangely in Southend. He was restrained at the scene and again during the journey to the police station. He was taken to hospital after he stopped breathing and died later that day.

Al-Ani’s family hope the inquest in Southend will examine why police officers forcibly restrained someone who appeared to be suffering from mental illness.
