Alan Johnson to become Home Secretary
Gordon Brown has begun a make-or-break reshuffle in a bid to reassert his authority over government after James Purnell last night became the third Cabinet minister to quit in the past three days.
Alan Johnson, the former health secretary, is understood to have accepted the job of home secretary. The weakened prime minister is expected to allow Alistair Darling to retain his post as chancellor, in a blow to Ed Balls, the children’s minister and Brown’s ally.
