Vulnerable adults social worker removed from register

A social worker from Dundee who repeatedly failed to follow procedures in assessments of vulnerable adults has been removed from the register for misconduct.

Andrew Bennett failed to ensure that a series of referrals were logged on the computer system at Dundee Council between November 2007 and August 2008.

The ensuing backlog of referrals led to a number of service users receiving a poor standard of care.

Failed to follow procedures

At a hearing in Dundee, a Scottish Social Services Council conduct committee recommended that Bennett be struck off the register. Anna Fowlie, chief executive of the SSSC, said Bennett “repeatedly did not follow procedures and, in doing so, failed to meet the standards expected of registered social workers”.

Bennett’s former employer, Dundee Council, was heavily criticised last year after toddler Brandon Muir died from injuries caused by his mother’s partner.

A significant case review found poor information-sharing and recording had undermined the ability of agencies to properly investigate the case.
